the end
of another school year
Goodbye to some of you have a wonderful summer and enjoy yourselves.
Some of you will be back in the fall. Hope to see you then

Conte crayons head from classwork today. We all attempted to do broad masses rather than lines.
I’ve been thinking about sensitivity as it relates to artistry. David Leffel has remarked that the artist should feel the movement through the whole arm, hand, fingers And down the brush into the fibers as they connect with the surface. Each stroke of the brush relays the whole intent.
Self Portrait Project
How we see ourselves is sometimes poignant, sometimes amusing sometimes alluring and sometimes disturbing but always pretty entertaining.
Most arty types attempt to draw themselves. Most famous artists documented themselves starting when they were young and continuing until they were quite old. Some artists, like the strange Odd Nerdrum, from Norway, paint themselves a different types. Here he has painted himself as the prophetic savior of painting. A self portrait doesn’t have to be a serious thing but it should show something abot yourself that is current.

You might also like to participate in a larger community style project like this one:

However you see yourself it is always a good idea to be as imaginative as you can since dull images are, well, boring.
This is just one of the dozens of self portraits Van Gogh did.

Hairy Grid
that’s about all I accomplished during our digital phase in art class in February and March.
I finally managed with Adam’s help to learn to roll the camera icon on the screen which tilted the grid. I got my poor rectangle embedded through this grid and the hair grew longer during my attempt at animation but that was it……
Autodesk Maya is a very sophisticated software. Maybe if I persist someday I will understand NURBS. maybe not……………
NEW STUFF - PORTRAITS

STARTING WHEN WE GET BACK FROM SPRING BREAK!
Okay we don’t look like her but we are all unique and so we will be attempting to express that uniqueness in portraits, self portraits and such….
Actually going through magazines and getting well done comps of people is a time honored way for art students to hone their skills at drawing/ portraying people.
Some good examples would be any image of man woman girl or boy that is well lit, easy to see details and mostly head or head and upper body shots. Also if you have good photography skills taking photos of your self or friends is another good way to get models for free. the best way to photograph for modeling purposes is to NOT use any flash but rely on natural light and the best way to control your light source is to use daylight near a window so you have one clear strong light source. Photographing outdoors is okay unless you are in direct sunlight where the light is bleaching out features and creating very strong shadows. You want to keep things even with light shadows and gentle highlights like the photo above. Also you don’t want multiple light sources as they confuse the way the facial forms look.
AUTODESK MAYA!!!!!!
to get a free student version of this software that will enable you to make the same kinds of cgi stuff they do in movies like Avatar, Alice in Wonderland, South Park, etc….. they used maya.
so bring your laptops for February and March cause we will be learning how to do all kinds of digital stuff.
